Banking and Mass Media

NTB's coverage of banking 1986-1995.

Media coverage of banking topics is both posistive and critical. The diagram on the left depicts the increased interest given during the Norwegian bank crisis in 1991.
Mass media, as the most important public arena in society, can both support and challenge the legitimacy of the banks. One day banks use the media to define and stage their information towards society, the next day, mass media controls the agenda.
The banks seek to influence the impression that society has of their activity through information and advertising in massmedia. The diagram on the right depicts the incremental advertising expenses following deregulation in the 80's.
