Statistical Information Systems

Statistics means "information about the state" and is the basis for a great deal of the research accomplished by the social scientists.
National statistical bureaus are in charge of collecting, screening for errors, processing, organizing, and storing information about their countries. They are also responsible for making official statistics accessible for social scientists and other users.

The national statistical bureaus have developed extensive statistical information systems, supported by modern information technology. Indeed, they were among the first organizations to use computer technology for non-military purposes.
